Want to skip the filler creams and make your own whipped tallow balm at home?
Good news: it’s simple, customizable, and incredibly effective. You don’t need fancy tools or a lab—just a stove, a blender, and a little intention.
Whether you’re just curious or looking to make a DIY tallow moisturizer for your baby, your face, or your dry hands—this guide has you covered.
What You’ll Need
Ingredients:
1 cup grass-fed beef tallow (Try to get Kidney, Heart, or Pelvic suet for the higher vitamin concentration, ideally from a trusted local source)
1-2 tbsp cold-pressed olive oil (or jojoba oil, optional for softness)
1-2 tbsp salt to remove odor.
1/2 cup water to remove impurities
Optional: Your favorite dried herbs ex. Lavender, chamomile, mint, or even rosemary.
Supplies:
Saucepan or ideally a crockpot
Cheesecloth or fine strainer
Glass jar(s) for storing
Hand mixer or stand mixer for whipping
A large bowl for cooling
Step 1: Render the Tallow
If you’re starting with raw suet:
Chop it into small pieces.
Add to your crockpot or saucepan with salt and 1/2 cup water and heat slowly on low, up to 24 hrs.
Stir occasionally until fully rendered.
Strain through cheesecloth into a large bowl.
Let it cool and solidify.
Pro tip: we repeat this process once more for a pure and clean finish.
Shortcut: You can also buy pre-rendered grass-fed tallow online—but always choose food-grade from a trusted source.
Step 2: Melt + Mix
Gently re-melt your tallow until liquid (don’t boil), Pour into a mixing bowl and let it cool slightly until it starts to solidify around the edges.
Optionally: before adding to a mixing bowl, pour the liquid tallow into a jar with a lid. Add that jar to a water bath with the lid loosley fitting. Keep this on low for 6-8 hrs.
Step 3: Whip It Good
Once it’s partially set, whip it with a stand mixer or ideally a hand mixer for 5–10 minutes. You’re going for a creamy, whipped texture—like soft butter.
Once you have stiff peaks, add the jojoba or olive oil until you reach your desired texture.
Whip again to blend.
Step 4: Store It Right
Scoop your whipped tallow into clean jars. No refrigeration is needed—it’s shelf-stable for months.
Keep one by the sink, one in the nursery, and one in your bag. A little goes a long way.
